    Looks like you have to buy updates starting a year after you buy it. Is it necessary?

    Correct, you have to buy an annual subscription if you want any new updates/fixes.

    The device will continue to work without the subscription, just don't factory reset it without one.

     mysteriously my tool developed an issue shortly after my subscription expired.. just bite the bullet and pay every year for the updates.. it extends the warranty as well.. i had to send mine in twice.. once for screen issue.. last time for a new battery..
